The expedition From Sea to Sky 2001 on Iceland was the first project of the emerging ski for nature program. On Iceland the goal was to traverse the island from the South coast to the North coast by fair means, thereby collecting snow and water samples on Europe's largest ice field, the Vatnajökull, over the whole route in order to support a scientific hydrological study related to climate change done by the University of Freiburg.
We started at sea level, a spot we reached by public transport. Form here we carid all our gear, comprised of Telemark skis, self made sledges from recycled cross country skis, a self made kataraft boat and the research equipment up to the snow line.
Serious storms and piles of new snow made the climb of Iceland's highest point, the Hvannadalsjökull, extremely difficult, and basically lost our sponsored tent in one severe storm.
From here the route led us about 100km over the ice cap, leading to the river Jökulsa a Fjöllum, with Europe's highest water falls. We set up the kataraft and floated an adentureous trip North to the coast. |
